G'S SPOT - San Juan Islands II

In early August 2004 we went on another whalewatch trip in the San Juan Islands. We went with the same tour company but unfortunately we didn't get the flute-playing captain this time. The Archivist did get some better photos though. The sunset photos were from the beach at Deception Pass State Park, the night before the tour. The Orcas we saw were supposedly from L-pod, members of which are often seen around the San Juan Islands in the summer months (only J-pod members are in the area year-round). L-98, or Luna / Tsuxiit, was separated from the L-pod in 2001 and has been a favourite news topic in the Northwest over the past few years. Some people want to capture it and reunite it with its pod. The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation believe Tsuxiit embodies the spirit of a deceased chief and oppose this action. Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace and captain of Sea Shepherd, is also against the plan and has written an editorial.
